RESEARCH It is a common practice to preoperatively medicate patients with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin or Toradol to preemptively manage postoperative pain. This is understood to decrease the need for advanced pain management through narcotic medications, notably for minor surgical procedures. Consequently, this is believed to reflect in hospital patient satisfaction scores. Is this, in fact a patient focused practice or a cost saving measure? Through a series of studies, interviews, evaluations and surveys, I hope to identify the efficacy of this practice with a recommendation that is specifically patient centered.

WORK Currently, I am employed with the Novant Health System in the Forsythe Women's Center. The anesthesia department is a very research rich environment and is recognized as one of the top OB Anesthesia research centers in the country. The staff is comprised of Anesthesiologists from Wake Forest University Baptist Health System and Novant Health System Certified Nurse Anesthetists. As a collaborative team, we are engaged in evidence based research throughout the year. Resident Anesthesiology Physicians as well as Student Nurse Anesthetists are trained, exposed and actively involved in the various areas of research in the environment by the existing OB anesthesia staff. As these areas of research are concluded, the infomation is disseminated to the medical community through publications, lectures and presentations impacting direct medical practice throughout the world. |
